Our planet is always shifting. Earthquakes can change our earth and have a huge impact on living and non-living things. Earthquakes can be very dangerous and we need to study them because we need to know what causes them and what to do.

An earthquake is the shaking and movement of the earth's surface. This happens when tectonic plates move or break because they are pushed by heat and preserue deep within the planet. Tectonic plates are the outer, 60 mile, shell that make up the earth's crust and part of the mantle.

When there is movement under ground faults or cracks can happen. Then the tectonic plates slip and create movement and waves. These shock waves are energy released and can be different speeds. Primary waves are the fastest and cause rock to expand. Secondary waves make the rocks go up and down. The surfce waves are the slowest but carry most of the energy.

Seismologlist studies the waves and try to figure out when and where earthquakes may happen. This is important becasue they can track possible earthquakes so people can be prepared for such tragedies.

Some poeple believe that earthquakes are a resultof fracking. More reachsearch needs to be on this topic.
